What is a WhatsApp voice agent?
An AI agent that handles voice interactions associated with WhatsApp, including voice notes and, where supported through the WhatsApp Business Platform, programmatic calling experiences.
Why is this important?
Voice reduces friction for customers who prefer speaking, have accessibility needs, or need to explain complex situations. The agent must preserve transcription quality, consent, identity, latency, and seamless transfer between voice and messaging.
How it works
The system receives a voice note or call event, captures or transcribes audio, resolves identity and context, generates or synthesizes a response, calls approved tools, and stores the transcript, actions, and outcome with the customer record.
Technical example
A customer sends a voice note describing a delivery problem. The agent transcribes it, identifies the order, asks one clarifying question, updates the delivery request, replies in the preferred format, and escalates if confidence is low.
Implementation notes
Confirm current WhatsApp calling availability and regional requirements. Address recording consent, biometric and sensitive data, transcription errors, language detection, latency, interruption, background noise, accessibility, retention, and human transfer.
